Full Review What a great job Saturday morning commercials have done in 2004. Here is another product that was introduced to my son via the television and immediately added to his most-wanted Christmas list because he wanted to battle his friends and collect battle chips as seen on TV. The toy is small and compact. The item can be opened by pulling the round bottom part of the toy straight down. The cover instantly flips up and reveals the square display and the control pad. The game is lightweight and comfortable to hold. There is a thin odd-shaped handle on one side. The game comes with 3 removable chips plus one built in called Megabuster. The chips are for battling a virus or in a tournament. To battle you place the chip in the top slot and then you have 10 seconds to aim and attack the enemy. Each of the chips has a different strength. A chip can only be used once during a battle. The chips are not absolutely necessary for battle so if one gets lost, the game still can be played. The TV commercial implied to my son that he could collect more cartridges but we have not been able to find any more. My son assumed this would be like a video game but it is far from it. It is similar to a hand-held game at best. The screen is in black and white on a tiny cube screen. The images are made of tiny cubes so would be less appealing to a kid who frequently plays advanced game systems. Game length for this toy is about 2-10 minutes at a time. Battles are quick and usually don’t last longer than a minute. My son would love to be able to play with it longer but the toy doesn’t always allow it. Once the battle is over you put the game down while running and wait for another virus. For instance, you sit the game down and read a book. When another virus comes you will hear the alert sound. If you stop playing you can pick back up where you left off. You can speed up the virus by gently shaking the toy. A virus will randomly appear and the system will alert you by sound and display. The viruses are destroyed by shooting them with energy balls from a gun. If you win the battle you will receive experience points and will eventually advance to the next level. If you lose you do not get experience points and go into recovery to heal MegaMan. You can not battle while MegaMan is in recovery. The game has to be turned on for recovery so basically you have to have the gadget turned on sitting next to you while you are doing something else. Another way of healing is to shake the gadget for a couple minutes for it to heal which is pretty weird and annoying. The sound effects are heard through the three small speaker holes in back. There are sound effects when an option is selected, during battle, or when it locates a virus. The sound can be turned on or off through the menu. The only way MegaMan can communicate to you is through words that scroll across the screen, he does not talk. The toy does require a round battery (CR 2032) which runs about $3.00. We had to replace the batteries within the first 24 hours. Then a second battery replacement occurred just 6 weeks later. I do no believe this was played long enough to require batteries again. The game does not have an on/off button, it turns off automatically. There is no indicator that lets you know when you need a new battery, but the images start fading before the battery dies. If a battery dies while in game play all of the saved information will be lost. One of the reasons my son wanted one of these so bad was so that he could battle his friends as advertised. Unlike most toys, this one actually comes with the cord that is needed to connect systems. However, the kids were not able to play together because the second game system was freezing up and not allowing battle. Another disappointment is that he wanted to collect more of the cartridges but we have not been able to find them anywhere. I don't see any need to collect more anyway. The toy is based from off the video game and the MegaMan NT Warrior cartoon. We do not find this to have much to do with either. Thank goodness Grandma got this gift for him, he really does enjoy the toy. He carries it around a lot, talks about it, and plays it when he can. This would be a great toy for the right person. This can be found at many stores such as Wal-Mart, Target, & ToysRUs. There are also other styles such as Megaman Pet Personal Terminal: #2 and Megaman NT Warrior Pet. Recommended for ages 6 and up.
